The Making of the Dough
To everyone who has ever wondered if their dreams of opening up their own business could ever come true... just know it is possible!
Since before 2020, I’ve always wanted to start my own bakery. But with everyday life responsibilities and not much confidence in myself, I never committed to truly pursuing it. I’ve always loved baking; it made me feel better and served as a gift I used to make others happy.
It was not until two years ago, when I was making cookies for my husband’s coworkers, that I realized I could open my own at-home bakery. Curious if it was a serious possibility, I looked into getting a baking and food license.
After many talks with my husband and best friend, I felt encouraged to pursue my dreams. I spent a whole night thinking of what my business would be called. I played with Dena’s Sweets, Sweet Treat, Dena’s Dough, but I fell in love with The Sweet Dough. Afterward, I spent a year getting all the licenses I needed to officially run an at-home bakery.
Once all the legal stuff was done, it was time to have fun and make my menu! I wanted to start small, and it took off from there. I hired a graphic designer from Etsy, and we went back and forth on the design and brand of The Sweet Dough.
I wanted The Sweet Dough to represent me; I wanted it to show who I was. A simple but friendly person. That is when we landed on the type, color, and logo!
The moment it felt real was when it all came together. Seeing the cookies inside the packaging, along with the thank-you cards and labels, felt amazing. I was seeing my dreams come true.
All this to say to anyone who wants to open their own bakery, or just in general open their business, do it! It can be stressful, a bit hard, and even discouraging sometimes, but it was all worth it. Just remember, bakers, if baking truly makes you happy, then that is all you need. Everything else will be easier as long as you love baking.
